A Clinical Study of 38 Cases of Postoperative Ventral Hernia



Abstract
A postoperative ventral abdominal or incisional hernia is due to the failure of closure of the abdominal wall following laparotomy. This report represents a clinical study of thirty-eight incisional hernias which were managed during a period of 5
years
from May 1986 to February 1991 at the Dept of General Surgery at Kyung Hee University Hospital, the results were obtained.
1) Among 776 hernia patients, 38 of them were identified to be incisional hernias.
2) Male/females/male ratio was 1:2.5.
3) Thirty patients were in the 5th to 7th decade of life.
4) Obesity was present in 22 patients.
5) In 31 out of 38patients, incisional hernia was discovered within one year after the operation.
6) The most common operation was appendectomy, the operations were done under emergency condition in 20 patiants.
7) the most common incision was lower midline in 12 cases.
8) Recurrence was present in 2 cases with no case of mortality.
